Extraction of Tarragon Essential Oil with Supercritical CO_2 and its Analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

The aim of this study was to investigate the condition of pressure and temperature more convenient to obtain the oil from tarragon with supercritical CO_2 and compare the corresponding yield with that of the oil obtained by hydrodistiliation. Dried leaves of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus. fam. Asleraceae) were used as a matrix for supercritical extraction of essential oil with CO_2. A flow apparatus, with an extraction vessel of 350 cm~3 and two separators of 250 cm~3, was used to carry out studies at temperatures of 40 and 50℃ and pressures of 90 and 100 bar. The oil was analyzed by GC-MS and its composition was compared with that of the oil isolated by hydrodistiliation. The major component identified was estragole, which represents 61-73% of the oil. The yield obtained from hydrodistiliation was 0.47% while, from supercritical extraction at the best conditions was 0.36%.
