Carbon- and weathering steel panels (200xl00x2mm) were exposed for a two years period (between July 1998 and August 2000) in INCERC's marine experimental site, between Constantza and Mamata. the experimental exposure site is settled at about 50m from the seashore, at 7m altitude. Rust samples were collected from each panel and analyzed, using XRD and IRAS techniques. Results showed, nut only that IRAS a rehable investigation method for steel corrosion products is, but also that its identification capabilities arc, in this case, far greater than those of XRD. The analyzed rust samples displayed multiphase rust systrms. that produced some interpretation difficulties, due to the enhanced by poor crystallinity peaks broadening, and strong overlapping bands. However, by comparison with pure, artificial iron oxides and oxy-hydroxides spectra. the main constituents of rust were established A possible mechanism for corrosion products development in early stages was proposed.
