The supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of coriander essential oil was studied using coriander (Coriandrum sativum, fam. Apiaceae) seeds ax raw material and CO_2 as solvent. The effect of operation conditions was analyzed in a series of experiments at temperatures between 40 and 50℃ and pressures between 100 and 120 bar. The colected extracts were analyzed by GC-MS and the relative composition of the essential oil was determined. Linalool is the principal component extracted. The optimum conditions for linalool extraction were 40℃ and 120 bar; in these conditions, linalool represents more than 75% of essential oil. We obtained an essential oil asymptotic yield of 1.2 wt % of the loaded material. Furthermore, the effect of CO_2 flow rate and mean particle size of coriander seeds was studied in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 kg/h and 0.5 to 1.0 mm, respectively.
