This paper outlines the methods used by First Hydro Company to safeguard the long-term integrity of the Generator Motor (GM) stator windings at Dinorwig and Ffestiniog Power Stations. A summary is given of the off-line and on-line techniques used to assess the state of the winding insulation and slot wedging. Details are included of the methods used and the frequency of testing. The underlying philosophy is to develop condition monitoring methods which provide sufficient information. in a clearly understood format and which incur minimum outage time on the GMs. Increasingly use is made of on-line monitoring and the automatic trending of data.
