Abstract: One of the new issues confronting refinery operators is the impact thatrnmercury can have upon their operations. This contaminant is gaining a high profile atrngovernmental levels and it is therefore increasingly important for refiners tornunderstand the potential sources of mercury within refinery feedstocks, the fate andrndistribution of mercury within a typical refinery flowsheet and the technologies that arernavailable to remove this contaminant in an environmentally sound manner. This paperrnwill provide a context for the mercury issue, it will discuss the likely fate of mercuryrnwithin refinery processes and it will describe Johnson Matthey Catalysts’rnPURASPEC_(JM) technology that is a proven solution for mercury removal from a varietyrnof intermediate and product streams.
