Sugarcane is a rich source of energy and sugarcane being renewable in nature, proper utilization of energy results in reduction of Green House Effect. Steam is a major input for processing the sugarcane juice. Once the Co-generation is in place in Sugar Industry conservation of energy has become vital. The steam consumption was 55+% in old plants and in new plants it is around 40+%. It has been observed that there is tremendous potential in the process house itself to reduce the steam consumption to less than 35% by proper utilization of waste heat and re-engineering of the system set up. This paper discusses various measures adopted at different mills of Sugar Industry in India to reduce steam consumption to a level of 35% in the past two years.
