INDIAN ALCOHOL INDUSTRY - RICE BRAN CAKE AND SWEET SORGHUM AS ALTERNATE RAW MATERIALS

Indian alcohol industry from time to time is facing the shortage of molasses at the same time its cost is increasing day by day. This has necessitated the need to search for new alternate renewable raw materials. This presentation describes about some renewable substrates including rice bran cake obtained as a byproduct from rice mills after the extraction of oil from it. This is a rich source of starch and has successfully been utilized for the fermentative production of ethanol with sufficiently high yields withfermentation efficiency value over 90%. Similarly sweet sorghum which is afour monthly crop is a rich source of sugar and carbohydrates. It has been cultivated at NSI farm and the expressed juice has successfully been fermented to produce high yields of ethanol with fermentation efficiency values over 90%.
