Distillery spent wash is one of the major industrial pollutants characterized by high organic load, obnoxious odour, dark brown color and low pH. It poses a serious threat to water quality in several regions of the country. A fungal culture was isolated in our laboratory from soil which was found to be effective in removal of the coloring compounds found in the distillery effluent responsible for its dark brown color. This culture was later on identified as Aspergillus oryzae JSA-1. The coloring compounds found in distillery effluent were prepared synthetically in our laboratory. The culture of Aspergillus oryzae JSA-1 was found to degrade synthetic colorants and also colorants in distillery effluent effectively when grown in basal medium containing carbon and nitrogen sources for 10 days at 30℃ on rotary Shaker at 150 rpm. The culture was found to decolorize the bvomethanated distillery effluent by around 78 % with optimum conditions for growth and decolorization in 10 days while 26 to 40 % reduction in melanoidin, caramel and ADP concentration:
