ANTIBIOSIS IN SUGARCANE GENOTYPES AGAINST WOOLY APHID

Sugarcane varieties were screened for resistance to white wooly aphid, which had taken in epidemic form. It was observed that the endogenous compounds such as phenolice, terpenoids and Jasmonic acid offer resistance to this pest. This is termed antibiosis & defence mechanism. Varieties such as Co 91010, Co 2002-22 contained three times more of these compounds than the susceptible checks.Co 91010 tolerates moisture stress, besides resistance to wooly aphid. It has high yield potential and a good ratooner. This variety is being micropropogated and released to this region for general cultivation.
