NOBILIZATION OF ERIANTHUS AND SACCHARUM SPONTANEUM: CONVENTIONAL APPROACHES

Sugarcane breeding has progressed steadily over the last 115 years with the result some 130 million tonnes of sugar is produced today. The leading role played by the breeders was in their ability to develop widely adapted and resistant varieties with reasonable return for the farmer and the miller. Now a new dimension is added to the breeders responsibility, namely to develop energy cane. Unfortunately, the genetic base remains narrow due to inherent difficulties, some of which are addressed in this paper to help breeders save time and expenditure to achieve the desired results. The subject discussed are synchronization of flowering times, pollen handling, hybridization techniques, selection of hybrid populations, evaluations for commercial use and ultimately, how to use experimental data to draw various conclusions especially the future approach to breeding varieties for various uses.
