From the point of view of thermal design for fluid transport systems there are two operation regimes that dictate the requirements on performance of the system. There is the scenario of "steady state operation", representing stable operation, and the transient scenario of the "shut-in", where changes are occurring in operational regime. These two approaches to the design of a thermally insulated system often give differing results if looked at in isolation. The performance of the insulation materials over time, with a view to both thermal, mechanical and ageing performance are critical factors which must also be considered at the design stage in order to develop cost effective and robust solutions capable of meeting the industry's demands. This paper deals with the choice and evaluation of materials, along with a conservative, robust design procedure suitable for use in the pipeline insulation design process.
