During resent years there has been an increasing interest in titanium as a material for offshore risers. The use of titanium in offshore risers has been considered in several projects in the North Sea over the last decades, namely Heidrun, Visund, Kristin and Asgard. Additionally, a significant number of titanium taper joints have been successfully designed and are put into service. The principles of standards such as DNV Offshore Standard for Submarine Pipelines (DNV OS F101) have been utilized for design of titanium risers. However, significant modifications have been necessary in order to use this standard for titanium purposes, introducing extensive demands to the design process. In this connection, DNV is currently developing a recommended practice (RP) for design of titanium risers, DNV RP-F201. The RP is based on a probabilistic foundation using limit state formulations and following the Load and Resistance Design Format. The format is flexible to easily accommodate new technical results from research or future developments. All aspects of the design, including relevant considerations to manufacturing and fabrication, are covered.
