摘要

Many teachers in the United States and Canada use computers in the classroom; however, despite admonishments from prominent politicians, captains of industry, and some educators about the importance of technology and its power to enhance teaching and learning, many teachers remain skeptical of the benefits of technology. Much of that skepticism arises from the chasm between political rhetoric and fiscal reality. However, some skepticism is generated because the position of many advocates of technology is antithetical to teachers' roles, philosophies, and views of the purpose of education. This paper examines the funding of school technology in the context of general under-funding of public education and the clash of philosophies between technology advocates and teachers. Both of these factors contribute to the ineffective use of technology in the schools. The promises of politicians to "close the digital divide", improve economic competitiveness, and to "leave no child behind" without adequately funding the education system, in general, and information technology in particular, represent empty promises to teachers, children, and society.
