THE METEOROLOGY OF TRANSIENT LUMINOUS EVENTS - AN INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW

This contribution reviews the basics of atmospheric deep convection and electrification as it pertains to the generation of stratospheric and mesospheric transient luminous events (TLEs). Emphasis is placed on sprites and sprite-producing lightning, and the meteorological regimes in which they are found.
