Abstract: Camcorders are easy to use, transportable, provide a large integrated storage capacity, and are inexpensive. This makes them ideal image acquisition devices for many tasks in digital photogrammetry. Their geometric accuracy performance, on the other hand, is lower than that of comparable inspection type cameras. This paper gives a qualitative analysis of degrading effects such as the camera (color sensor and electronics) and video tape recording. Other practical issues, such as playback on another VCR, copying, and multiple playback, are also addressed. The geometric and radiometric characterization showed large response nonuniformities and degradations of the linearity. Geometric deformations depend on the recording/playback configuration and shear components exceeding 1 pixel were detected. The warm-up time was found to be similar to that of standard CCD cameras. !8
