MIPAS-B OBSERVATIONS FOR THE VALIDATION OF TARGET PARAMETERS OFENVISAT CHEMISTRY INSTRUMENTS

Embedded in the Envisat validation programme of thernchemistry instruments GOMOS, MIPAS, andrnSCIAMACHY three balloon flights were carried outrnwith MIPAS-B, the balloon borne version of MIPAS.rnThe first one at mid-latitudes during the night of 24/25rnSeptember 2002 from Aire sur l’Adour, France,rnadjusted to the night-time overpass of orbit 2975. Thernsecond one in the late winter arctic vortex on 20/21rnMarch 2003 from Kiruna, Sweden, matching eveningrnand morning overpasses of Envisat (orbits 5508 andrn5515) and the third one in the midnight sun from thernsame location on 2/3 July 2003 (Envisat orbits 6996rnand 7004). This paper outlines the instrumentalrncharacteristics of MIPAS-B, the observation andrnvalidation strategy, the data processing and comparesrnMIPAS-B results to Envisat results that have beenrnavailable so far.
