SCIAMACHY VALIDATION SUMMARY

In early 2004, preliminary validation was conducted forrnall SCIAMACHY data products: those generated operationallyrnby ESA’s Envisat ground segment and those generatedrnnon-operationally at several scientific institutes.rnResults as presented and discussed during the secondrnWorkshop for Atmospheric Chemistry Validation of Envisatrn(ACVE-2) in May 2004, are summarised here. Thernmain conclusion is that the SCIAMACHY products havernimproved considerably since the First Envisat ValidationrnWorkshop in December 2002, both in number and inrnquality. All validation results are however still preliminaryrnin the sense that: a) data sets from longer periodsrnwith better sampling are necessary to detect seasonallyrnvarying errors and other medium-scale effects; b) not allrnavailable validation sources were properly used, due tornlack of time; and c) comparison results reported here dornnot always reflect the expected final quality of the productsrnas some of the SCIAMACHY data products are notrngenerated with state-of-the-art processors (due e.g. to delaysrnin the delivery of accurate level-1 data). Various recommendationsrnfor product improvement have been collectedrnduring the meeting and are summarised here.rnNote: Due to the short time available for validation beforernthe ACVE-2, several contributions on SCIAMACHY validationrnin this proceedings have evolved since their presentationrnat the ACVE-2, so that conclusions for individualrnproducts may be different than in the original presentations.rnThis summary paper is however mainly basedrnon the presentations, and not on the papers in these proceedings.rnTherefore, we refer you to the separate productrnpapers for more up-to-date conclusions on each product.
