A scientific NO_2 retrieval developed at the Universityrnof Bremen was applied to all available SCIAMACHYrnnadir spectra from August 2002 to May 2004. The NO_2rncolumns show the expected seasonal, latitudinal andrnregional variations and a good internal consistency.rnThe precision of the individual measurements wasrnassessed by analyzing the scatter of the results withinrncertain areas and an excellent standard deviation ofrnbelow 3×10~(14) molec cm~(-2) was found. Comparison ofrnthe SCIAMACHY columns with measurements fromrnthe German DOAS and FTS validation network showsrnvery good agreement with the exception of highrnlatitudes in summer, where a systematic underestimationrnis apparent and polluted sites, where therndifferent sensitivity of the measurement systems torntropospheric absorptions plays a role.
