Six balloon-borne instruments were involved in thernvalidation of GOMOS during two campaigns, atrnmid-latitude on September-October 2002 and atrnhigh latitude on January-March 2003. The verticalrnprofiles obtained with these instruments, and by thernsatellite instruments POAM and SAGE, arerncompared to GOMOS profiles. The new version ofrnthe GOMOS vertical profiles of ozone, NO_2, NO_3rnand water vapour is strongly improved. Inrnparticular, the unrealistic oscillations in thernprevious profiles are now removed. Nevertheless,rnsignificant discrepancies remain between GOMOSrnresults and balloons data. Based on the LPCErnprocessor applied to the GOMOS transmissionrnspectra, recommendations are proposed in order tornimprove the retrieval, in particular by better takingrninto account the effect of the chromatic scintillationrnand the contribution of aerosols.
