VALIDATION OF THE MIPAS LEVEL 2 PRODUCTS USING REFERENCEATMOSPHERES

In this paper, MIPAS level 2 products have been comparedrnagainst two related reference atmosphere data setsrnderived for use in MIPAS studies. Such comparisons canrnhighlight areas of difference which may be indicative ofrnproblems either with the MIPAS data products, or in thernreference atmosphere data sets. A key feature of manyrnof the comparisons is the large scatter of individual profilesrnwhich can be seen in certain locations, particularlyrnnear the top and bottom altitudes of the retrieved profile,rnand which can lie well beyond the expected limits fromrnatmospheric variability. Additionally, such comparisonsrnare a good opportunity to investigate the performance ofrnthe current cloud clearing of the MIPAS data, and it willrnbe shown that a number of cloud contaminated profilesrnappear to be present in the MIPAS data set.
