Nitrogen and phosphorus being nutrients cause eutrophication which has a degrading effect on the aquatic environment. Conventional biological treatment plants provide inadequate removal of both nutrients. Therefore, in recent years, efforts have been made to enhance the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from municipal wastewaters. Many existing wastewater treatment plants have been upgraded to attain higher levels of nutrient removal.;Biological nutrient removal process has received considerable interest in recent years to achieve higher levels of nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The University of Texas at Arlington conducted a pilot plant study to investigate the performance of a biological nutrient process using an anoxic, anaerobic, aerobic reactor sequence.
