Students of acoustics, especially of rooms, propagation, transducers and noise/vibration, will undoubtedly have been familiar with Leo Beranek's seminal work, named simply Acoustics, first published in 1954. For many people, myself included, it formed a constant and well-thumbed reference. It was by no means the earliest, nor the most academic textbook, but those were its great strengths. For many ordinary working acousticians, it provided an accessible and easily-understood reference for those irritating questions "what was the formula for…".
