Supportive Policies, Global Upturn to Give Thailand Lift

Bangkok―Thailand's gross domestie product in 2002 is likely to lie within the central bank's forecast range of 2% to 3% and possibly closer to the upper end of the range if early positive signs in the economy are sustained, said the International Monetary Fund. The IMF's resident representative, Lorenzo Giorgianni, said supportive mac-roeconomic policies and better prospects for the global economy should improve Thailand's economic growth outlook this year. "If the encouraging signs of a revival in private consumption and investment are consolidated in the coming months, growth this year could be close to the upper end of the BOT's forecast range," Mr. Giorgianni said. The IMF is in the process of revising its outlook for 2002 and beyond for its World Economic Outlook report in May, Mr. Giorgianni said. In its December report, the IMF predicted Thailand's GDP would rise 2% in 2002.
