Asian Companies Take Lessons on Corporate Governance

Sydney-A group of Filipino businessmen went to Australia in April to learn how to teach less-seasoned company directors back home the principles of corporate governance and board responsibilities. Run by the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the train-the-trainer course follows similar assistance given to the Thai Institute of Company Directors in 2000. It is a small part of Asia's response to the 1997-98 regional financial crisis that has spurred governments to tighten corporate-governance practices by introducing measures to protect minority shareholders and improve corporate disclosure.
