A There is a way you can decide what size ESC to purchase for your plane; actually, you are selecting the ESC to fit your motor specifications. Many people recommend that you select the ESC based on the maximum continuous current rating (in amps) of your motor. This is a good rule of thumb to follow; I would just add another 25 percent to that number and pick my ESC based on that current. For example, if I had a motor that I know would run at full throttle pulling somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 amps, I would get a 25A ESC not a 20A. My reasoning for this is that I know a 25A ESC would run cooler with 20 amps flowing through it as compared to a 20A ESC with the same current. With this safety margin I don't have to worry about running my aircraft at full throttle all the time. Many of today's ESCs have a battery eliminator circuit (BEC). This feature allows the main battery pack to run both the motor and the RC system. However, this feature has its own rating or is limited as to how many servos can be pulling current through it. Check your ESC instruction manual for this limitation.
