Every once in a while, the Backyard Flyer staff discover a great new flyer that's just the ticket to drive the hobby in a new direction. This time, it's the Illusion DF45 electric ducted-fan (EDF) jet distributed by Kyosho USA. No, this little speed demon isn't suited to backyard flying, and though it will appeal to beginners and experienced pilots, the Illusion is definitely intended for advanced pilots. With a span of slightly less than 2 feet and weighing a scant 12.3 ounces, this EDF is a real ball of fire! The model features a beautifully molded fiberglass fuselage, built-up balsa wings and tail surfaces, basic hardware, CA hinges, an inrunner brushless motor, a 45mm ducted-fan unit with a 5-blade impeller and laser-cut wooden formers and battery tray. The fuselage is nicely painted and clearcoated for a slick, low-drag finish, and the wing and tail surfaces are covered with iron-on heat-shrink film.
