It has never deen easier the excithing world of model aviation. Dramatic advances in electric power systems have been a boon to the backyard pilot. There are many choices today, from building a kit to planes that are ready-to-fly right out of the box. But which one should you choose to tear up the sky at the local park or school-yard? Here are the things you need to know to become a backyard ace. Decide whether you want to get into flying RC planes for the long haul or just to get a taste of it. If you just want to try it out, buy a simple ready-to-fly (RTF) 2- or 3-channel trainer (usually rudder, elevator and throttle control). These come with everything you need, can be flown shortly after being taken out of the box and are inexpensive. If you know RC is for you, a "full house" plane with 4 channels is a better investment. These planes have all the basic controls (aileron, rudder, elevator, throttle) that will be used on all your future planes. By learning on a 4-channel plane, you will lay the foundation for higher-performance planes down the road.
