Post-tensioning delivers a Diamond in the steel city

Designed by Twelve Architects and constructed by Balfour Beatty, the £81m Diamond building is both a homage to Sheffield's steel industry and a physical representation of its purpose as the university's Faculty of Engineering. The scheme is the university's largest-ever investment in learning and combines 19 specialist engineering laboratories with 302 IT suites, 30 group study rooms and 1200 engineering study spaces. Externally, the building has been designed to reference the Victorian detailing of the surrounding built environment and express the city's connection with the steel industry. The facade is based on cellular automaton - the mathematics model used by the university to describe how the micro-structure of steel changes during processing.
