The Tsunami House

In 1820, the south end of Camano Island, in the Salish Sea of Washington State, USA, collapsed. The bluff, called Camano Head, cleaved from the island and slid into the sea, creating not only a roiling mess but also a tsunami that swept across to Hat Island. An oral account of it is recorded in Colin Tweddell's Historical and Chronological Study of the Snohomish Indian People: "The bluff slid in. People at Hat Island in the early summer morning saw Camano Island bluff smoking; they couldn't see it for the smoke; and there was something black coming toward them, and then they saw it was a wave."
