Roller-compacted concrete, or RCC, is concrete that is stiff enough to be compacted by vibratory rollers, hence the name. It is composed of cement, aggregate and water (just like conventional concrete) but has zero slump and is placed with a high-compaction asphalt-type paver. There is no need for surface finishing, dowelled joints or reinforcement, which means that RCC pavements can be simple, fast and cost-effective. Widespread use of RCC started in Canada in the 1970s but it wasn't introduced to the UK until 2002.
