I read with interest the description of the award-winning New Oncology Wing, St James's Hospital, Leeds, in CONCRETE and in particular the details of the 12 linear accelerator concrete bunkers. However, I believe this raises points that need further discussion.rnFirst - radiation protection. Early last year, I was given advice by an expert employed at Sellafield. He said, "radiation travels in straight lines", so that cracks in concrete are of no consequence. However, there would presumably be a marginal risk if a straight construction joint opened up but this can be avoided by forming any construction joints with a 'joggle' (much as tongue-and-groove in floorboards). Obviously, it is better to avoid joints altogether.rnMy contact also explained that testing for radiation leaks is very straightforward and is routinely carried out when construction is complete. A source of radiation is placed in the bunker and the exterior is then checked with a Geiger counter. In the unlikely event of leakage being detected, it can be investigated and rectified.
