South Block Residents Prepare To Move In To Highbury

Arsenal Football Club relocated to its brand new 60,000-seat Emirates Stadium in June 2006. Following this transfer, work started immediately on the demolition of the legendary Highbury Stadium in readiness for the construction of a new large residential development comprising 725 flats, a basement car park and a stunning landscaped garden on the site of the original football pitch (Figure 1).rnArsenal moved to Highbury from south-east London in 1913. The original sloping terraces are said to have been formed from excavated material originating from the construction of Gillespie Road underground station on the Piccadilly Line. Spectator facilities slowly developed and improved over the years with the construction of the steel-framed West and East Stands in the 1930s, the famous Clock End (south stand) in the 1980s (Figure 2) and the North Bank built to a design by Jan Bobrowski in the early 1990s. The East Stand was considered an exceptional example of early English football architecture and was listed by English Heritage. But by the year 2000 Arsenal had outgrown the Highbury site and plans were being developed to create a new super stadium on a nearby larger site at Ashburton Grove.
