A research project, led by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), has been conducted to validate the approved guidance on the specifications for precast concrete pipeline systems to resist the thaumasite form of sulfate attack (TSA). The main focus was a field investigation of the performance of concrete pipes, which comprised the burial (in 2001) and exposure of concrete pipes to sulfates in Lower Lias Clay. Eight pipe sections were specially made with a range of compositions of concrete designed in accordance with BRE Special Digest 1:2001.rnThe specific project objectives were: 1. To demonstrate that precast concrete pipeline systems, specified in line with BRE Special Digest 1 will resist TSA for their declared working lives. 2. To investigate whether particular concrete specifications resist TSA without recourse to the Additional Protective Measures (APM) specified in Special Digest 1.
