Concrete, and the uses of concrete, have come a very long way since the Romans mixed slaked lime with pozzolana, a volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius. As concrete has developed there is now hardly a structure in the world that doesn't contain it, and its versatility, durability and cost-effectiveness continue to make it a key component in buildings today.
