Near-surface-mounted (NSM) reinforcement has been used for the first time on a major UK project for a car park strengthening and renovation scheme. The Trenchard Street Car Park, in the heart of Bristol, provided an opportunity to assess the benefits of this relatively new technique (see Figure 1). Approximately 2700m of carbon fibre composite bars were bonded into grooves cut into the surface of the cantilevered reinforced concrete deck slabs. In early 2002, consulting engineers Tony Gee and Partners (TGP) had developed a scheme for strengthening the deck slabs with externally bonded fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP). TGP was aware that, although feasible, a new technique being developed in Europe and the USA could provide a more appropriate solution. Working with repair specialist Connaught Parking Services and material supplier MBT-Feb, TGP developed an NSM reinforcement proposal that was accepted by Bristol City Council.
