Environmental Topics: Containing and encapsulating waste

Cement and concrete technology plays a valuable role in isolating, containing and encapsulating contamination and waste. Migration of hazardous materials can be prevented, thus minimising contamination risk to water supplies and danger to nearby people and wildlife. The synergistic combination of physical and chemical characteristics of cement-based systems make them particularly suited to these applications. Cement-based systems are also extremely useful for immobilising and encapsulating hazardous waste. In some situations, however, additional processing facilities will have to be used to remove the resulting leachates.
