The Concrete Society ibre-reinforced polymers incorporating glass, carbon or aramid fibres (generally known as FRPs) are widely used to strengthen concrete structures. Applications include bridges, buildings and industrial plants, while materials may be in the form of prefabricated plates or shells, fabrics or rods. The economics of FRP use depend on factors such as the cost of access and possession time. However, the few published comparisons with other strengthening techniques indicate that they provide a very cost-effective solution. In 2000, the Concrete Society published Technical Report 55, Design guidance for strengthening concrete structures using fibre composite materials. This was the first design guide in accordance with British Codes. While preparing the Guide, the Working Party maintained an awareness of developments elsewhere, so guidance was broadly in line with that proposed by other organisations.
