Concrete at its best: the 2002 awards

The 34th annual Concrete Society awards dinner took place on 7 November in London. The climax of the evening was the announcement by Society chief executive Martin Powell that the overall winner of the 2002 awards for Outstanding New Structures was the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Education Centre, Sussex Place, London, submitted in the building category. The Judges considered that 'the subterranean construction provides a pleasing environment in which highly complex architectural, structural and service requirements have been fused. It makes good use of the available space, and concrete was the natural choice of construction material.'
