Strengthening Kingston Bridge, Glasgow

Opened on 26 June 1970, Kingston Bridge, Glasgow,rnwas built from in-situ pre-stressed concrete using balanced cantilever construction. With a main span of 143m and two 62.5m side spans, it remains among the largest examples of this type of construction. Designed to carry five lanes of traffic in either direction, it now carries more than 180,000 vehicles per day and forms a strategically important crossing of the River Clyde. There is no suitable alternative for most of the traffic using this route and any disruption would have a severe economic and environmental regional impact.
