The newly published Concrete Society Technical Report 53 Towards rationalising reinforcement for concrete structures looks at an important aspect of improving the efficiency of the construction process. The Egan Report suggested that the UK construction industry could improve its productivity: one specific target was to reduce capital costs and construction time by 10%. Although the cost of the concrete structure is generally a small proportion of the total project cost, the construction time may account for a large proportion of the programme. In a typical office building, for example, construction of the frame may represent only 10% of the cost but may take 50% of the time. Savings in time in the construction process will be reflected in savings in the total project cost.
