This paper is not intended to be a state-of the-art review of corrosion inhibitors for concrete. Instead, the various issues facing those who wish to expand the use of corrosion inhibitors are examined. The biggest issues are for those wanting to use them for rehabilitation rather than for durable construction. The research and field trials on corrosion inhibitors reveal the following: 1. There is little field data on corrosion inhibitors. 2. Available field data is often poor, with no clear evidence of the amount of inhibitor applied, whether it reached the rebar, and whether it is reducing corrosion rates and extending time to cracking. 3. The many claims made about the transport of inhibitors through hardened concrete need to be independently assessed. 4. Definitive evidence is needed of the dosage versus chloride level to achieve a given (low) corrosion achieve a given (low) corrosion rate. 5. For application to hardened concrete, quantitative data on its penetration versus concrete cover and concrete permeability is needed. 6. More information is required on the performance of inhibitors, particularly well-controlled field trials and long-term corrosion monitoring.
