It wasn't so long ago the search for end-to-end QOS seemed like a search without end. With a forklift upgrade to ATM or management-intensive RSVP as their only choices, net managers could be forgiven their fatalistic views on ever making the enterprise safe for delay- and jitter-sensitive apps. Now fast-forward to 1999. Sure, ATM and RSVP (resource reservation protocol) are still playing major roles in extending QOS (quality of service) across the LAN and WAN. But it's the addition of the IEEE's 802. lp and the IETF's Diffserv traffic classification standards that could really signal the end to the search.
