But Pixar CEO Steve Jobs was the one squirming when an e-mail bearing his return address—and super-sensitive salary figures—ended up in every employee's mailbox. Consider it a cautionary tale. These days business depends on e-mail, but e-mail systems can't depend on any protection. Messages fly across the network unguarded, and even having a mailbox can be risky: The problem at Pixar Animation Studios (Richmond, Calif.) was traced to a disgruntled former employee who raided the payroll database and spoofed Jobs' address. But outright attacks aren't the only danger.
