IP-based e-mail servers open up proprietary packages and take the effort out of configuration and management. E-Mail is a killer APP at most companies; it's hard to imagine doing business without it. It's a killer for most network architects too, though for different reasons. E-mail server software—characterized by proprietary messaging formats and arcane administrative interfaces—can be deadly difficult to install, configure, and manage. Equally painful, the payoff for all this effort can be performance that barely registers a pulse.
