Here's a brain teaser: How can net managers guarantee quality of service for time-critical voice and video apps on IP backbones—without paying through the nose for ATM? Dynarc AB (Kis-ta, Sweden) says it has the answer: The DS-100 enterprise backbone switch. It's the first of its kind to offer guaranteed bandwidth on demand for high-priority packets using a new form of Layer 2 circuit switching called DTM (Dynamic Synchronous Transfer Mode). The DS-100 can furnish multicasting applications such as conferencing and streaming video, since with DTM a single circuit can connect any number of network nodes. What's more, Dynarc's product sets up or tears down circuits within a millisecond and changes the capacity of circuits on the fly.
