I recently received an E-Mail from an old friend and former contributor chiding me—and Data Communications—for being too ATM-centric, at the expense of IP. And this was before he saw the current issue, with its ATM case study. Frankly, I think he's off base; we've done due diligence on both technologies. We were on top of ATM from the start, and we've chronicled its long, at times tortuous, road to rollout. And we were early IP champions as well, while maintaining a healthy skepticism about some of the more outrageous claims being made for the protocol.
