Some network managers seem to think they can solve any problem if they throw enough bandwidth at it. Some networking companies have the same attitude about money. Spread enough of it around, and troubles tend to disappear. Unfortunately, money isn't magic—as Siemens and Alcatel are about to find out. They've been on a huge spending spree, buying some companies outright and taking an equity stake in others, all in hopes of cracking the lucrative U.S. networking market.
