Xylan's revamped omniswitch/router takes on heavy IP loads on carrier and ISP nets—and takes service provisioning to a new level. It not only funnels subscriber IP traffic to gigabit routers in the core, but also is the first of its kind to double as an Ethernet switch, letting carriers offer transparent LAN services in the metropolitan area. And it costs a third less per port than the competition, the vendor claims.
