Policy: it's one of those loaded words that politicians like to toss out, signaling anything from a tax cut for millionaires to a pay raise for Congress. It's getting quite a workout in the networking industry as well these days, as vendors shoulder one another aside to announce their grand plans for policy-based products. Trouble is, the average network architect—like the average citizen—is left wondering what it's all about. And now that a dozen vendors claim they can make policy the law of the LAN, there's even more confusion.
