Fiber to the desktop has long been seen in a bad light. Sure, it boasts big bandwidth, but its bloated costs make it impractical for all but the most advanced applications. Perhaps it's time to revise that perception. Fiber's cost has actually been dropping steadily for the past eight years or so, says Michael Colton, president of consultancy IRM International Inc. (Houston). The main reason has been advances in fiber connectors. And now another makeover could deliver even bigger bargains.
